New Children’s Library Set To Open
January 23, 2007 Brevin and Deena are building a library at the Salvation Army's Center of Hope, a homeless shelter for women and children in Charlotte, NC. This all began from an 8 year-old reading a story in a storage space, and it is now bringing the community together. There are exciting days ahead for The Salvation Army Center of Hope. They have begun a renovation program that will enhance the learning opportunities of the homeless children in the shelter. This renovation will convert what was a storage space in the corner of the facility into a children’s library that will enhance wonder and learning. This new library comes courtesy of Charlotte Bobcats’ point guard, Brevin Knight and his wife, Deena. The Knights have a charitable Foundation in Charlotte and other select cities called, The Assist by Knight Foundation. 
The idea for this addition came when Deena came, for what is now a weekly visit,
to encourage the women of the shelter. She brought along her 3 children, as she often does, to set an example of helping those less fortunate. She learned of a group of young children that had requested “storytime” at the shelter. The Knight’s oldest child Brenna, 8, gathered the children into a small corner of the shelter and read them a story. Deena was approached by the shelter’s coordinator, Harry Mack about the need for a library. She then knew that something needed to be done. Through their Foundation, the Knights have renovated that corner into a full children’s library, with fresh paint, new ceiling tile, inspirational material, and a hope for the future.
