January 30, 2007
The formal dedication of the Children’s Library was held at the Salvation Army Center of Hope on Tuesday evening, January 30, 2007.
Guest speakers included Charlotte City Councilman Anthony Foxx and New York Times bestselling author and NAACP Award winner, Omar Tyree
Upon conclusion of the speakers, the ribbon was cut by Brevin, Deena, and their children, at the library’s main entrance. With the library officially open, children flooded the rooms to take advantage of the new materials. This addition will enhance the learning opportunities of the homeless children in the shelter.
This day is a historic and fulfilling day for the city of Charlotte . It represents both the end of a long triumphant journey and the beginning of a new era for the Center of Hope. This event is a representation of what we can accomplish with teamwork and dedication. The library is the product of many people collaborating to make a difference. We appreciate Kendall Phills, Robin Davis, Sherri Sims and Victoria Blue, without whom we would STILL be sorting books. We would also like to acknowledge the hard work of Deronda Metz, Harry Mack, and the Center of Hope staff. Much gratitude is owed to Charlotte Preparatory School, Charlotte Christian School, the Charlotte Bobcats and everyone else who contributed to the thousands of books that were donated.
The hard work and persistence have paid off, and now we celebrate a new beginning for the Center of Hope , the Salvation Army, and The Assist by Knight Foundation. This library brings hope to the children of our future!
